Collider-Cup

On your mark, get set, go! We’re a month away from our flagship Collider Cup VI — one of the biggest student entrepreneurship events at UC Berkeley. This semester, we’re excited to introduce a brand new virtual format in which teams, judges, mentors and guests will be able to participate online.

The event will be held on Thursday, May 7 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Please be sure to RSVP here in order to receive your confirmation email, and register on Zoom for the official webinar dial-in details (link will be in Eventbrite confirmation email).

The Collider Cup is an all-star showcase and competition for student teams from various classes offered by the Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology. This semester, we’re excited to present teams from 11 different classes, covering areas such as Blockchain, Sports Technology & Human Performance, Alternative Meat, Deplastifying the Planet, Tech Firm Leadership, Tech Entrepreneurship, Data-X, Innovation Engineering, Berkeley Method of Entrepreneurship and more.

In our new Spring 2020 format, student teams will pitch their ideas to a panel of judges on Zoom. We’re thrilled to announce our partnership with The Intuitive Foundation who will provide an automatic final round of meetings with the winning company of the Collider Cup and two “wildcards,” selected by the Intuitive Foundation, for the chance to receive up to a total of $100,000 in seed funding — depending on the startup’s needs — in order to pursue their ventures.

The Robert and Kathleen Dobkin Intuitive Foundation’s mission is to support education, innovation, and entrepreneurship in the fields of engineering, technology, medicine, and science. Our new collaboration aims to combine our mutual goals and foster a culture of communication and creativity between the educational process of technology, business, and entrepreneurship.

Confirmed judges for Collider Cup include Marvin Liao, former Partner at 500 Startups, Tamanna Khemani, Outreach Manager at Y Combinator, Gabe Fenton, President of the Intuitive Foundation, and Jay Onda, Start Up Investments for Orange SV.

We will kick off the day with a welcome from Ikhlaq Sidhu, SCET’s Chief Scientist and Faculty Director, followed by an overview of the Certificate in Entrepreneurship & Technology and an announcement of our Teaching Award winners for “Best Instructor” and “Best Course Coordinator” for the Spring semester. The awards are intended for individuals who have displayed exemplary dedication and innovation towards excellence in their field, curriculum development and pedagogical practices.

Last semester, “Don’t Be A Stranger,” a phone game app which alleviates loneliness by strengthening intergenerational groups snagged the top prize. The team was formed in Shira Abel’s Marketing for Technologists class and competed with 18 other SCET teams. Come out to watch our trailblazing student teams compete for the coveted Collider Cup!

Audience members will also get the chance to vote for their favorite competing teams via Zoom polls! Students will also have the chance to learn about some of our upcoming Fall 2020 courses and the Certificate in Entrepreneurship & Technology

We look forward to “meeting” you online at SCET’s Collider Cup VI!
