We may still be remote, but that does not stop our students! In the spirit of innovation, SCET’s Collider Cup VII will again be virtual, and we have an amazing line-up of the best student venture projects Berkeley has to offer.

Come watch teams pitch to a panel of investors and industry experts as they vie to win the grand prize from our partner fund, Pear VC!

We’re excited to announce our partnership with Pear VC! This semester, the top three teams will be fast-tracked to the final round of interviews for the $25K Pear Competition at Berkeley, plus, the top team will enter the final round for the exclusive Pear Accelerator S21!

Pear partners with entrepreneurs from day zero to build category-defining companies. They have founded 8 companies and invested early in startups now worth over $40B. They use this knowledge to provide founders with hands-on support in product, growth, recruiting, and fundraising. They have been fortunate to partner early with companies valued at $1B+ such as DoorDash, Gusto, Branch, and Guardant Health.

Let’s meet our judges:

Ian Taylor is an investment partner at Pear. He focuses his attention on supporting students and recent graduate founders to create the next wave of world changing companies. Ian concentrates on supporting student founders and heads Pear Dorm. He met Pear while studying at Stanford GSB, and became a Partner upon graduation. He first fell in love with the Bay Area while studying mechanical engineering at UC Berkeley. A decade later, after working in commercial due diligence and venture capital in Europe, he returned to the Bay to work with early stage startups.

 

Afika Nyati is a design technologist and founder of Lingual, an early-stage startup developing accessible computer user interfaces for computer users with visual or motor disabilities. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT. In addition to his formal education, he is a self-taught designer. His startup, Lingual’s mission is to make computer control more accessible by developing user interfaces that can be operated just as effectively and efficiently with voice input and audio output as with touch input and visual output, the chief modes of operation for computers today. Outside of his work, he is interested in the emerging technologies and the ways in which they simplify and enhance our lives, music theory and composition, visual arts and painting, linguistics, and sound design.

ShiaoFong Yin, Managing Partner of TEALE Group, draws upon 35+ years experience in metals and manufacturing, cross-cultural organizational transformation and global business development. Teale Group’s primary investment focus is on female founded Travel, Education & Life science Enterprises. Shiaofong began her career as an engineer at General Motors, holding several technical positions in production through advanced engineering before leveraging her 15 years’ hands-on manufacturing expertise to oversee +$1Billion sales revenue as Sales, Marketing and Business Development executive for global automotive Tier 1s. A 2008 transplant assignment to China led to leadership positions in global supply management of metal products spanning China, India, North America and Europe. Most recently, her focus has been on cross-border due diligence of seed and growth firms for PE firms and TEALE Group. Shiaofong currently resides in Europe and teaches at Rosenheim University, Germany. She holds an MS from University of Virginia and an executive MBA from University of Michigan.

Jay Onda focuses on Startup Investment activities for Orange Silicon Valley, the innovation office of Orange Telecom in France. He is currently focusing on the 5G enabled business opportunities in both B2B and B2C sectors, cloud strategy, cloud gaming, and sustainability.

He brings 15+ years of startup experience focusing on product management and user experience and 10+ years of corporate innovation and venture experience. He is an active supporter, mentor, and advisor to various startups, startup ecosystems, and the corporate venture ecosystem.
