Collider Cup IV Winners: Team "Planted Poultry"

On your mark, get set, go! We’re a month away from Collider Cup V — one of the biggest student entrepreneurship events at UC Berkeley.

The event will be held on Friday, December 13, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Sutardja Dai Hall, in both Banatao Auditorium and the Kvamme Atrium.

RSVP here to attend!

The Collider Cup is an all-star showcase and competition for student teams from various classes offered by the Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology. This semester, we’re excited to present teams from a selection of our 23 classes covering areas like alternative meat, product design, technology entrepreneurship, blockchain and SCET’s flagship Berkeley Method of Entrepreneurship (BMoE) Bootcamp.

Last semester, alternative meat startup “Planted Poultry” conquered the competition with their groundbreaking faux chicken drumstick. The team, which was born out of SCET’s Alt.meat Challenge Lab, realized that plant-based meat was often too dry. They addressed this issue by creating a more complex product using agar to mimic the texture of solid fats in animal meats.

“It was really fun to try something a little harder that hasn’t been done, like a chicken drumstick,” Jessica Schwabach, one of the team members told SCET. “The structure’s not that hard to imitate, but we had to figure out how to use skin and bone to make a cohesive structure.”

In our new Fall 2019 format, student teams will pitch their ideas to judges while at their dedicated demo tables. The judges will then be tasked with narrowing down the playing field to the four top teams who will be the final contenders for the grand prize, the Collider Cup! The “final four” will then pitch to the entire audience of attendees and the full panel of judges, after which the top 3 winners will be announced. Each of the winning teams will receive an automatic final round of meetings with Arrow Capital to be considered for a potential $15,000 to $50,000 in seed funding, depending on the startup’s needs.

Arrow Capital is a student operated venture capital firm supercharged by Bow Capital & University of California’s Endowment Fund. They empower the next generation of world-class Berkeley startups through funding, mentorship, and long-term strategic partnerships.

Representatives from Better Ventures, a venture capital firm that provides funding and support to companies creating scalable solutions to some of the world’s biggest challenges; The Trione Student Venture Fund which provides $5,000 grants and office space to early-stage startups; Dorm Room Fund, a student-run venture fund backed by First Round; The House Fund, an affiliated pre-seed and early stage venture capital fund and Free Ventures, UC Berkeley’s non-profit, student run startup accelerator will also be in attendance and ready to meet with students.

Come out to watch our trailblazing student teams compete for the coveted Collider Cup!

Attendees will also get the chance to mingle with SCET instructors and staff to learn about courses, the Certificate in Entrepreneurship & Technology and other opportunities at the Center.

In addition to our cutting-edge teams, this semester we’re excited to announce “Best Instructor” and “Best Course Coordinator” awards at Collider Cup. The awards are intended for individuals who have displayed exemplary dedication and innovation towards excellence in their field, curriculum development and pedagogical practices. We encourage Fall 2019 SCET students and instructors to nominate course staff who have been able to arouse their curiosity of subject matter and interest in technology and entrepreneurship.

We recommend confirming your RSVP as soon as possible as a free lunch will be provided, along with the first 100 attendees receiving a free SCET phone wallet or pop-socket!

We look forward to meeting you at Collider Cup V!
